Information on upcoming Guest Speaker Josh Jasper

I have been working with Riverview Center, Inc. for 3 years as the Executive Director, C.E.O.  Riverview Center is a non-profit organization that provides services to those affected by sexual violence.  Upon receiving a master’s degree in social work at UCLA, I worked as a Child and Family Therapist in Los Angeles for a number of years while working as a domestic violence counselor with the Los Angeles Police Department.
My work in Los Angeles allowed me the opportunity to not only be introduced into the field of violence prevention but to also work with a variety of different populations including, but not limited to, residential treatment for teenage boys and girls, counseling for individuals that have HIV/AIDS, and the homeless.  Prior to working in Los Angeles, I served 4 years in the United States Marine Corps.

Most recently, I have worked with men and boys in our communities to begin the work of engaging men to effectively end violence against women and children.  Violence against women has been historically thought of as a woman’s issue.  To effectively prevent sexual violence in our community, we must make sexual violence a man’s issue.  Men must begin mentoring and teaching boys about how to be men in ways that don’t involve degrading or abusing girls or women.  In addition, we as men must have the courage to look inward and question our own attitudes toward women.
