Portrait of a Lady - Carrie Melton
Where are you from?
Born and raised in Jo Daviess County! Love living in East Dubuque for last 10 years.
What did you do before working with CHOICES?
I have been in Domestic Violence since I graduated from ISU.
What brought you to your current position ?
As a political science major, I always had an interest in politics and social causes. I began as a legal advocate for victims of domestic abuse and made my way to the Director of CHOICES. I enjoy working with an office full of women, for women, and would not trade it for any other environment!
What has been the most interesting aspect of you work?
I meet so many strong women who want to make changes in their lives. I also find it interesting to go out into the community and have the opportunity to talk about our work at CHOICES. I enjoy educating the community about violence against women.
What has been your biggest challenge?
Knowing that I can not change the world alone.
Tell me about your family.
My husband of 12 years, Brian is a Lieutenant for the Sheriff’s Office and we have two children: Emma is 9 (third grade) and Isaac is 3 ½ (preschool). My extended family members live all over and I wish we could see them more often!
Any pets? no
Who are you inspired by?
Strong Women of our Community who have paved the way for the rest of us like Vickie Gratton and Mary Sheahen. And my family who give me strength to do better each day.
What is you favorite book?
Green Eggs and Ham-anything by Dr. Suess!
Favorite Movie?
Good Will Hunting and Steel Magnolias
What is in your refrigerator?
Besides milk, OJ, and leftovers: Granny Smith Apples (household favorite), yogurt, juice boxes, eggbeaters, spinach, and wine.
If you could invite anyone to a dinner party dead or alive, who would you invite?
Although this is an odd group to bring together: Hillary Clinton, my deceased grandfather, Susan B Anthony, and John Stewart. All for different reasons!
What is your favorite vacation spot?
New Orleans and anywhere with a beach and umbrella drinks!
Your favorite pastime is….
Camping, making homemade greeting cards, time with family and friends, golfing, and traveling-when I can!
What has been your largest personal challenge?
Focusing on what is really important in life – the moments, not the materials.
What are you most proud of?
I am most proud of the miracles that my children have brought to my life, my recent 1-year anniversary marking the day I adopted a work-out and healthy eating plan to drop 30+ pounds and facing the challenges everyone has with being a woman, mother, and wife.
Are you living your dream?
Of course, but always trying to balance dreams with reality.
